About Microsoft's Cloud Operations & Infrastructure Team

Microsoft's CO+I team is the backbone of the company's cloud services, responsible for designing, building, and operating the infrastructure that powers Microsoft's cloud offerings, including Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform. With a global presence spanning over 200 data centers in 32 countries, CO+I is a complex and dynamic organization that requires a diverse range of skills and expertise to deliver high-quality services to Microsoft's customers.

Key Responsibilities

As a Critical Environment Technician, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of Microsoft's data centers and cloud infrastructure. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Hardware and Systems Operations:
    • Perform routine and complex tasks, such as vendor contact, upgrades, and troubleshooting, independently.
    • Act as a subject matter expert in a specific area of operations, such as electrical, mechanical, or controls.
    • Understand data center systems, their interconnections, and how they work together to deliver cloud services.
    • Operate all systems and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Monitoring and Maintenance:
    • Review and inspect critical environment-related office equipment, buildings, and grounds regularly for hazardous or unusual conditions.
    • Use technical knowledge and analytical skills to identify trends in equipment behavior and detect potential issues.
    • Monitor performance of maintenance and operations of equipment within the data center.
    • Use telemetry, control systems, and other platforms to monitor site status, analyze historical and current trends, and identify alerts.
  • Security and Incident Response:
    • Respond quickly to incidents and lead on-site incident response teams for all unusual circumstances that impact operations.
    • Collaborate with other critical facility professionals to perform corrective actions.
    • Develop new or update existing emergency operating procedures (EOPs), methods of procedure (MOPs), and standard operating procedures (SOPs) based on incidents.
    • Gather relevant data and create incident timelines/data, root cause analyses, and action items following an unusual condition.
  • Equipment and Systems Support:
    • Perform various types of maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting following MOPs and SOPs for at least one discipline and one type of equipment.
    • Supervise routine tasks within their technical subject matter area.
    • Follow recommended maintenance schedules and prioritize maintenance activities as needed.
    • Document tasks/issues for follow-up on a case-by-case basis and escalate as necessary.

Essential Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need to possess the following essential qualifications:

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • 4+ years of operations work/experience in a high-availability environment, such as data centers, oil and gas refineries, hospitals, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, or related fields.
  • Ability to work 12-hour shifts, including shift tasks during non-standard business hours, which may include nights, evenings, and weekends, as well as holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are highly desirable:

  • Experience working in a data center or cloud operations environment.
  • Knowledge of electrical, mechanical, or controls systems.
  • Experience with maintenance management systems and procedures.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
