Join Southwest Airlines as a Data Scientist Summer 2026 Intern to work on AI-driven projects enhancing customer experience and operational efficiency.

Your Role

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting on data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, generative AI, or optimization projects to support business objectives
  • Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of models used by stakeholders
  • Supporting solution formulation and communicating results from data analysis and models with direction from experienced Data Scientists
  • Participating actively in the Southwest Airlines data science community through collaboration and learning
  • Performing other job duties as assigned

About You

The company is looking for candidates with:

  • Classroom and/or industry experience using Python for data analysis, modeling, or scripting preferred
  • Knowledge of foundational statistics and math concepts preferred
  • Understanding of descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive statistical methods preferred
  • Basic knowledge of technology platforms and architectures applicable to data science preferred
  • Familiarity with data science project life cycle including stakeholder engagement, problem definition, planning, and execution preferred
  • Academic exposure to compiling, cleaning, transforming, analyzing, and visualizing large-scale data preferred
  • Skill in statistical and scripting programming languages preferred
  • Ability to evaluate appropriate data science, machine learning, or AI techniques with guidance and recommend solutions
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Currently enrolled full-time student pursuing undergraduate or graduate degree in Mathematics, Computer or Data Sciences, Information Technology, or related field
  • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at time of application
  • At least 18 years of age with valid U.S. Social Security Number
  • U.S. citizenship or current authorization to work in the U.S. required; no sponsorship available
  • Residency in eligible states for remote work or willingness to relocate

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly pay range of $25-$29 based on degree progress
  • Full-time, 40 hours per week from May 19 to August 7, 2026
  • Free, unlimited space-available travel privileges for the intern (taxes and fees may apply on international travel)
  • Provision of required equipment such as a laptop
  • Potential stipends based on eligibility and program criteria
