About the Role

As a Commercial Corporate Counsel at Costco Wholesale Corporation, you will play a critical role in supporting the company's domestic and international businesses. You will work closely with business leaders, departments, and external partners to identify and address legal, contractual, and regulatory issues. Your expertise will help drive business growth, mitigate risks, and ensure compliance with laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Global Business Support: Provide legal advice and counsel to various Costco departments and business units globally, including Costco Travel and Traffic/Depot departments.
  • Trade Sanction and Anti-Bribery Compliance: Manage trade sanction and anti-bribery compliance globally, ensuring adherence to relevant laws and regulations.
  • Contract Lifecycle Management: Draft, negotiate, and manage complex commercial contracts, including attention to compliance matters.
  • Risk Management: Advise business leaders on legal issues and risk management concerning business strategy development and implementation.
  • Training and Development: Identify opportunities for localized training globally on various legal, regulatory, and compliance topics.
  • Regulatory Monitoring: Track and interpret existing and emerging regulations; advise on regulatory changes and enforcement trends.
  • Special Projects: Perform special projects and other functions as directed.
  • Outside Counsel Management: Monitor, manage, and review work and expenditures by outside counsel to ensure quality, value, and efficacy of legal services.

Requirements and Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate Degree: Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to Practice Law: Admission in good standing to practice law in at least one U.S. state, and eligible to practice as in-house counsel in the State of Washington.
  • Transactional Experience: At least six years of general corporate and transactional experience acquired in a law firm, with some in-house experience preferred.
  • Compliance Experience: Experience with compliance with laws governing retail operations and regulatory matters.
  • International Markets: Understanding of and experience with laws impacting international markets where Costco operates a plus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Contract Lifecycle Management: Experience with contract lifecycle management systems.
  • Language Proficiency: Professional language proficiency in one or more of the international markets where Costco operates.
  • Overseeing Outside Counsel: Experience overseeing outside counsel.
